The 7 Deadly Sins, the 7 Heavenly Virtues and thier relevance to Mental Health

During one of my run away trains of thoughts I was thinking about the seven deadly sins and I had to look them up on a popular online encyclopedia as I couldn’t remember all of them. The article within said online encyclopedia stated that the 7 deadly sins were in contrast to the 7 heavenly virtues, which I had no idea existed. When I read what they were a little light bulb came on.

For those of you that don’t know the seven deadly sins are:
-Lust
-Gluttony
-Greed
-Sloth
-Wrath
-Envy
-Pride

The seven heavenly virtues are:
-Humility
-Kindness
-Patience
-Diligence
-Charity
-Temperance
– Chastity

Now, the origins of these character traits, if you will can be traced back to Aristotle and Plato who were alive over 2000 years ago yet the actual message behind the words is still important today. If you live your life being kind and helpful to others the better you will feel about yourself and the more people will be willing to help you. If you are a greedy and angry person then you will never truly be happy.

I am a firm believer that you get from the world what you put in. I think that if we keep these virtues on mind we can make the world a much happier place in which we all help each other rather than push each other down. Suicides would go down as would depression and anxiety if we were patient and kind to one another without letting greed control us.
